PARIS

The month’s first door opened before its first issue. Paris in premium, 25,000 points.

Flying Blue published its August promo list Saturday morning: premium economy between Europe and 6 US cities at 30,000 miles, both directions, a 25% cut from the standard 40,000. Route it through Citi’s 1:1.2 door and the seat costs 25,000 ThankYou points one way. Two discounts, multiplied. August’s counter opens with this exact seat: claim one, a pair booked roundtrip on the promo, about $2,200 in fares covered for 100,000 points. Day 1 of 21.

New York ‹› Paris · Air France premium economy · the August promo through the Citi door
Published Saturday, live now: Flying Blue’s monthly promo list puts premium economy between Europe and New York, Washington, San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas, and Houston at 30,000 miles, valid in both directions, bookable through August 31 for travel through January 31, 2027. That is the first discount. The second is already on the board: Citi transfers at 1:1.2 through August 22, which prices the same seat at 25,000 ThankYou points. The stack’s fine print writes its own lesson: the promo lives to the 31st, but the stack dies with its earliest leg on the 22nd. Premium economy also carries Flying Blue’s capped surcharges, and the economy list runs cheaper still: Miami, Orlando, LA, Seattle, Dallas, and Phoenix at 18,750 miles, 15,625 points through the same door. Claim one is the roundtrip version of this exact seat, times 2: a pair booked both directions on the promo, 100,000 points against a typical $1,500 roundtrip fare per seat, about $400 of taxes each. The counter opens where August’s first booking puts it.

The insight: every major currency reaches Flying Blue, which is why this program anchors so many of our routes. But only one door carries the 20% right now, and that door closes 9 days before the promo does. When a stack has 2 deadlines, the earlier one is the deadline.

THE MECHANISM · 01 OF 21
How the counter counts
The counter prices every claim the same way: what a real person would have paid, minus the taxes and fees actually paid, divided by the points spent. No aspirational rack rates, no counting fares nobody buys with cash. Claim one runs the formula in the open: a typical $1,500 roundtrip fare per seat, minus about $400 in taxes actually paid, times 2 seats, against 100,000 points. About $2,200 covered, about 2.2 cents per point, and that is the number the month opens on. The counter counts bookings, not opportunities, which is why it opens with one.
The sentence an affiliate site cannot print: a counter funded by card referrals cannot afford this formula, because the honest number is usually smaller than the commission.
FOR THE HOUSEHOLD
Check 2 numbers tonight: your ThankYou balance and one saved fare for a Europe trip you actually want. If the promo list touches your city, price the seat through the 1:1.2 door before holding anything; the stack’s real deadline is Aug 22, not the promo’s 31st.
FOR THE OPERATOR
ThankYou points earned on business spend clear through the same door at the same 1:1.2. A pair in premium at 50,000 points round-trip prices client travel at roughly what one economy fare costs in cash; the desk flags which company cards feed the balance and typically at what earn.
HOW WE READ IT
01Caught the promo at publication Saturday morning: 30,000 premium both directions, book by Aug 31, fly through Jan 31, 2027.
02Stacked it against the live board: 40,000 standard, 30,000 promo, 25,000 through Citi’s 1:1.2, which dies Aug 22.
03Held seats before moving a point, because promo space is the real constraint…

NOTAMS · AUGUST
⏱️A stack expires with its earliest leg.The promo books to August 31; the 20% door closes August 22. If this seat is yours, the calendar says the 22nd, not the 31st.
🗓️Promo space is limited and loose dates win.Leave the date field empty, read the whole month, and hold the seat before any transfer. Transfers are one-way doors.
The Starbucks reload brackets have 2 days left. From Wednesday the register earns 1 mile per $1, gated by a Delta flight in the prior 12 months. Wednesday’s issue decodes the gate.
THE LESSON
Two discounts multiply only while both are alive. A stack expires with its earliest deadline, and this one says August 22.
