Everyone calls 1:1.7 a bonus. The division calls it 0.85 cents. One mechanism fixes it.
The biggest number on the board is the worst deal on it, again. Last month’s 100% IHG door closed with our skip verdict paid in full, dead last at about a cent; the 70% replacement runs to August 31 and earns the same honesty. At our half-cent valuation of an IHG point, 1:1.7 returns about 0.85 cents per Chase point, against roughly 2 cents of flexibility surrendered. Claim 4 is the exception that proves the verdict: a member holding the IHG co-brand booked a 4-night award block at a 30,000-point property, paid 90,000 for 120,000 worth of nights, and the freed 30,000 points priced at about $150 at IHG’s own half-cent retail. Small money, printed anyway, because that is the only shape in which this door makes sense. Everyone else doubling into 1:1.7 because the ratio sounds big is converting 2-cent flexibility into 0.85-cent hotel scrip. The stay decides. The ratio never does.

The 4th-night multiplier
IHG’s co-brand cards include the 4th night free on award stays: book 4, pay 3. A clean 4-over-3 multiplier on every qualifying block, it stacks with any transfer ratio and compounds on longer stays booked as 4-night blocks. It is also the template for every hotel perk: find the multiplier, write it as a fraction, apply it to the honest base value, never to the brochure.
The sentence an affiliate site cannot print: the 4th-night math only works after admitting the base point is worth half a cent, which is the sentence ratio headlines are built to avoid.
FOR THE HOUSEHOLD
Run the division before the transfer, every time: 5,000 points against an $85 cash rate is 1.7¢, and suddenly the “bonus” is the expensive door. One shape redeems this ratio: the 4th-night block on a priced stay. Otherwise hold.
FOR THE OPERATOR
Hotel ratio doors punish bulk moves. If your team books blocks, the 4th-night shape at scale is the only version worth modeling: on a 4-night, $600 stay the door returns about 25% of the bill. Anything shorter, pay cash and keep the points liquid.
