IHG
Everyone calls 1:1.7 a bonus. The division calls it 0.85 cents. One mechanism fixes it.
The banner says 70% bonus and your thumb is already hovering. Stop and do fourth-grade division first: at 1:1.7, five thousand points buys an $85 hotel night, which is 1.7 cents of value going in and less than a cent coming back out on most stays. Big number, bad trade, with exactly one honest exception, and it’s printed below.

A 4-night IHG block · co-brand 4th night free · the only clean case
Here is the one shape where this door earns its banner: the 4th-night block. Take a 4-night stay you were paying cash for anyway, say $600 all-in. Move just enough points through the 1:1.7 to cover it, apply the free-4th-night pattern, and the door hands back about $150, roughly 25% of the bill. Claim 4 on the counter is exactly that: +$150 recovered on a stay that was happening anyway. Any shorter stay, any speculative transfer, and you’re the one paying the banner.

The insight: ratios are marketing; divisions are money. The 100% version of this exact door was July’s loudest bonus and finished the audit in last place. The 70% version is quieter and prices lower still.

THE MECHANISM · 04 OF 21
The 4th-night multiplier
IHG’s co-brand cards include the 4th night free on award stays: book 4, pay 3. A clean 4-over-3 multiplier on every qualifying block, it stacks with any transfer ratio and compounds on longer stays booked as 4-night blocks. It is also the template for every hotel perk: find the multiplier, write it as a fraction, apply it to the honest base value, never to the brochure.
The sentence an affiliate site cannot print: the 4th-night math only works after admitting the base point is worth half a cent, which is the sentence ratio headlines are built to avoid.
FOR THE HOUSEHOLD
Before any transfer this weekend, do the division out loud: points times the ratio, divided into the cash price of the room. If it doesn’t clear 1.5 cents, close the tab and keep your points where they’re flexible. The only version worth doing is a 4-night stay you were paying for anyway.
FOR THE OPERATOR
If your company books multi-night blocks, this is the one ratio door worth modeling: on a 4-night $600 stay the pattern returns about a quarter of the bill. Anything shorter, pay cash, keep the points liquid, and let the 70% banner sell to someone else.
HOW WE READ IT
| 01 | Held the valuation line: IHG near half a cent, because that is near what IHG sells them for. |
| 02 | Cleared claim 4: a real 4-night block, 90,000 for 120,000 worth, freed value printed small and true. |
| 03 | Priced 2 more candidate stays against cash; 1 cleared, 1 walked… |

THE LESSON
The ratio is what they advertise. The division is what you get. Only one survives a calculator.
